Guide to Middleburg, Virginia
A Weekend Guide to Middleburg, Virginia
Middleburg sits in the heart of Loudoun County, where rolling hills, fertile land, and proximity to Washington, D.C. made it ideal for fox hunting and horse breeding in the 19th century. Wealthy landowners established large estates here, and the region gradually became synonymous with Virginia’s equestrian culture. Today, horse farms, hunt country traditions, and steeplechase events still shape the area’s identity.
While I came for weekend spa getaway at Salamander Middleburg, the town itself is filled with locally owned businesses, cafés, vineyards, and cultural attractions worth exploring.
I’ve been through this area three times now, and despite Middleburg having a smaller footprint I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface on what is there to discover. A good problem to have. :)
If you're planning a visit, these stops are a great place to start.
Cana Vineyards
Just outside of town, Cana Vineyards offers tastings, vineyard views, and a large outdoor seating area overlooking Virginia's wine country. The winery produces a variety of wines, from crisp whites to fuller-bodied reds, and frequently hosts live music and seasonal events. It's an easy stop for an afternoon tasting or a relaxed afternoon with friends.
I can’t take credit for this recommendation. My somm friend recommended it above of all the Middleburg vineyards. It did not disappoint. We had a tasty flight on the second story patio overlooking the grape vines, waited on by very friendly Don. The interior walls are fully decked out in all the awards and accolades of this winery. I especially liked seeing all the women in winemaking awards. “She has advanced the wine program at Cana to produce several award winning wines and in 2017 was the first Virginia winemaker to be named Woman Winemaker of the Year at the Women’s International Wine Competition.”
Brunch at Harrimans
If you're celebrating a special occasion—or simply want one memorable meal while you're in Middleburg—reserve a table at Harrimans, the signature restaurant inside Salamander Middleburg. The restaurant focuses on seasonal, ingredient-driven cuisine that showcases Virginia farms, regional producers, fresh seafood, and thoughtfully prepared butcher's cuts.
The dining room overlooks the rolling countryside, making sunset reservations especially beautiful. If your visit falls on a Sunday, Harrimans also serves a multi-course family-style brunch that has become one of the area's most popular dining experiences. We’ve been twice for weekday brunch, and appreciated the seasonal specific menu each time.
Arrive a little early to stroll the grounds of Salamandar resort with a cocktail before your reservation. Harrimans is part of Salamander Middleburg, a resort founded by Sheila Johnson, one of the most influential Black women in hospitality in the United States.
Crème de la Crème
Located in the heart of Middleburg, Crème de la Crème is a boutique known for French home décor, gifts, and accessories. The shop's curated collection reflects the traditional elegance. We pored through this store for a good hour, it is incredibly well curated. Whether you're searching for a gift or simply browsing, it's one of the town's most charming independent stores.
Knead Wine
Part wine shop and part restaurant, Knead Wine has become a local favorite for wood-fired pizza, small plates, and an extensive wine selection. The shop was founded by Master Sommelier Jarad Slipp and focuses on making wine approachable while offering a thoughtfully selected inventory.
It's a popular stop for lunch, dinner, or picking up a bottle to enjoy later. We enjoyed pizza al fresco at one of the small tables outside of the shop for our first visit, and then to go poolside pies at Salamander resort. It is extremely good wood fired pizza, we beelined it here immediately upon visit #2.
Common Grounds
Common Grounds serves coffee, pastries, breakfast items, and light lunches in downtown Middleburg. The café is a convenient stop before a day of exploring and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Its central location makes it easy to add to any walking itinerary through town. We enjoyed afternoon lavendar matchas here, so I can’t speak on the quality of the coffee. Service was warm, and the interior is cozy.
La Selva
Located a short drive from downtown, La Selva is known for its coffee and made-to-order crepes. The menu includes both sweet and savory options, making it a popular breakfast and brunch destination for visitors exploring Loudoun County and Virginia's Hunt Country.
Locke Store
Located in nearby Millwood, Locke Store has been serving the community since the 1800s. Today, the historic general store operates as a market, café, bakery, and wine shop. It oozes history and charm.
Visitors can stop in for sandwiches, baked goods, local products, and specialty groceries before continuing their drive through the Shenandoah Valley and northern Virginia countryside.
We stopped for a casual brunch here, and had excellent coffee and brunch items. We also picked up crackers and other snacks from the store for picnic provisions.
State Arboretum of Virginia
Situated at the State Arboretum of Virginia, the grounds encompass more than 170 acres of gardens, trails, and curated plant collections. Visitors can explore native trees, seasonal blooms, and walking paths while learning about Virginia's natural landscape. Admission is free.
If you're visiting in late October or early November, make time for the Ginkgo Grove at the State Arboretum of Virginia. For a brief window each fall, more than 300 ginkgo trees turn a brilliant gold before dropping their leaves almost all at once, creating a golden canopy and carpet that's become one of Virginia's most photographed autumn sights. Timing is everything, so if you can catch it at peak color, it's well worth the detour. The arboretum posts seasonal updates each fall to help visitors time their trip.
Where to Stay
For a full luxury stay in Middleburg, Salamander Middleburg is the most well-known option in the area. Set on a sprawling estate with equestrian views, spa offerings, and destination dining including Harrimans. I’ve written a separate post focused entirely on the property for anyone looking to go deeper into the experience there.
Save These for Your Next Visit
Even a full weekend isn't enough time to experience everything Middleburg has to offer. These destinations are already on my list for a return trip:
Red Fox Inn & Tavern
Established in 1728, Red Fox Inn & Tavern is one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the United States. The historic property offers lodging, dining, and a glimpse into Middleburg's colonial history.
Middleburg Books
This independent bookstore hosts author events, book clubs, and literary programming while offering a carefully curated selection of titles.
Local Artists and Galleries
Middleburg has a thriving arts community, with galleries and studios featuring regional painters, photographers, sculptors, and artisans throughout the year.
Middleburg Antique Gallery
A destination for collectors and antique enthusiasts, the gallery features furniture, artwork, decorative objects, and vintage finds from a range of periods and styles.
Goodstone Inn & Restaurant
Goodstone Inn & Restaurant is on my radar as a place worth planning an entire visit around. Set on a private estate with rolling fields, stone barns, and walking trails, it feels like an idyllic countryside escape. The dining focuses on seasonal, farm-driven menus, much of it sourced directly from the property itself.
Final Thoughts
Middleburg offers a mix of history, charm, cuisine, wine, and outdoor activities that makes it easy to fill a weekend. Whether you're visiting for a stay at Salamander Middleburg, exploring Virginia wine country, or simply looking for a small-town escape, I don’t think you can go wrong selecting Middleburg as a destination.
