Burnt Hill Farm: A Regenerative Winery and Farm-to-Table Experience in Maryland

Burnt Hill Farm: A Regenerative Winery and Farm-to-Table Experience in Maryland

Burnt Hill Farm is worth adding to your travel destination list. Set on 117 acres in Montgomery County, Maryland, a mere 45 min away from DC, Burnt Hill Farm turns regenerative agriculture into an experience extending beyond wine. Guests are invited to slow down, sip and savor, spending an afternoon learning how the land, food, and wine all work together.

What Makes Burnt Hill Farm Different?

Unlike many wineries, Burnt Hill Farm is built around regenerative farming, a method of agriculture focused on improving soil health, supporting biodiversity, and creating a more resilient ecosystem. (This makes my little NCSU Sustainable Agriculture minor soul beam with love and appreciation.)

Every wine produced at Burnt Hill Farm is estate-grown, meaning the grapes are cultivated on the property itself. The winery embraces a low-intervention philosophy, allowing each vintage to reflect the growing season rather than aiming for identical wines year after year. Production is intentionally small.

The architect for Burnt Hill Farm in Clarksburg, Maryland, is Matthew Compton of Foundry Architects in Baltimore. They collaborated with the founders to design the striking, modern, Scandinavian-style structures that overlook the property. Truly stunning architecture, that really highlights the nature surrounding. Every seat in the house has a gorgeous view. This architecture is the perfect match for the vision and mission of Burnt Hill Farm.

A Farm-to-Table Meal

One of the highlights of a visit is the food. Chef Tae Strain creates seasonal menus that showcase ingredients grown on the farm whenever possible. Rather than serving food as an accompaniment to the wine, each course is thoughtfully designed to complement the tasting experience. Expect dishes that change throughout the year depending on what's growing, making every visit slightly different from the last.

Planning Your Visit

Because Burnt Hill Farm focuses on curated experiences rather than walk-in traffic, reservations are recommended before visiting. A $26 per person reservation fee secures three hours to enjoy the farm and includes a welcome glass of Champagne method wine upon arrival. We were rather lucky in securing a last minute cancellation the day before (June 2026), so you can always try emailing if you do not see openings for your travel dates.

My experience

The road up the hillside of grape vines ends at a vista of striking black modernist structures overlooking the valleys below and Appalachain mountains in the distance. Warm inviting staff greeted us at the entrance with a glass of bubbly each while we waited for our table, sitting on rustic sheep fleece covered benches. June was a great month to visit, a cool breeze and warm sun making this wait quite pleasant. We were led to our table, stopping en route to take an old school polaroid memento of this visit.

Each black modernist structure houses spaciously laid out dining tables, each grounded with their own rug, and each with an incredible view. It felt more akin to being hosted inside someones home, as opposed to being sardined inside a restaurant. Feels like a place where you’d take your shoes off, which we saw a fellow diner do, and I understand why. They are very clearly not aiming to flip tables quickly, you’re encouraged to sit, relax, enjoy your 3 hour booking.

We enjoyed the Temperance flight (3 non alcoholic mocktails). Of note, one does not have to be a wine drinker to enjoy a Burnt Hill Farm visit. We also very much enjoyed the house made foccacia pizza, which really highlighted how simple ingredients can be masterful when executed expertly, and when its fresh.

All of the food brought out from the kitchen looked incredible, and we absolutely want to come back to try more.

Service was kind and attentive, but also a relaxed vibe. I enjoyed taking laps outside in between courses, admiring the grape vines and architecture, with mocktail in hand.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of wineries where you can sip a glass of wine with a nice view. Burnt Hill Farm stands out with its regenerative agriculture, thoughtful hospitality, modern architecture, sweeping hillside views and carefully crafted wine. I’d be very eager to come back for a repeat visit, and also explore sister winery Old Westminster.
